- Thank you to all of the parents who pitched in to help with the class party last week! The kids had a blast :)
- It is the start of 2nd quarter! Students should take time each night to study the notes in their interactive notebooks as we had several students not study for tests this past quarter. Thank you for your help in this! Ways to do this are to reread notes, copy notes, use the foldables or flash cards that have been handed out.
- The only homework this week is to read the book club book! The book is due on Monday, the 11th (I pushed back the due date).

- DARE posters are due on 9/13. This is not an optional assignment. I apologize- I spoke to the kids about the requirements but forgot to make copies of the sheet. I will send it home with kids this week. I will also be giving them time to complete it in class, if they wish.
- Homework starts this week. It will be sent home Monday and is to be turned in Friday. I’ve also included it on the website in case students forget to bring the paper home. This week I’ve included a special interview assignment as I learned many of my kids don’t know their home address or the phone number of a guardian. If there are any questions on the form you feel uncomfortable answering, please feel free to skip those.
- There will be a science vocabulary quiz on Tuesday, 9/17 on the words that were given to kids on Friday. Here is a website the kids can use to study. I noticed several kids left their words at school last week. I will make sure they have their copies tomorrow.
- I've updated the website with pictures and videos of activities we did last week.
- Please sign up for a conference in October if you haven’t already done so. Please sign up for a slot! Please note- these are student-led conferences so your child should attend, too.

Update- 8/25/19
Hello,
It was a pleasure meeting many of you over the past week. Like I mentioned in a previous email, I try my hardest to send an email each Sunday. These emails will also be posted on my class website on the Newsletter page. I try to make my emails interactive to help you get to resources faster.
We've been busy learning routines and rules and getting to know one another. Building relationships is so important at the start of the year, so we've been focusing heavily on building trust and familiarity with one another. This week we'll be continuing with routines but will also start to integrate some review of fourth grade concepts as well as new fifth grade content.
Here are some updates and reminders for the weeks ahead:
Regards,
Mrs. Wippich

I just wanted to send a quick email to all of my new students and their families to welcome you to fifth grade! I am really looking forward to a fun year of learning with this fantastic group of kids!
Just a few events I'm sure you've already heard about:
- Back to School Night for parents is Tuesday for grades 1-5. Grades 1 and 2 will be from 6-7pm and grades 3-5 from 7-8pm. I hope to see you there!
- Open House for kids and families is Wednesday from 9-10am. Please feel free to bring your supplies that day if you want so the kids will have less to bring the first few days of school :) Student Service Corps members also have a meeting Wednesday morning from 8-9am.
- First day of school is Thursday! Yay!
- Take a sneak peek at how our classroom looked over the summer on the main page.
- If you click on "More" you will see that I have some archived blogs from previous years you can take a look at.
- While on my page you can also check out where I post the homework each week we have it (I also give a paper copy to kids- the website is just in case it gets lost or eaten by the dog or a sibling). The page is called "Homework, Tests, and Time Management" and is where the digital version of study guides will be posted as well.
- The page called "Class Newsletter" is where I copy my weekly email that I send to parents and kids each week. This email is meant to keep you up-to-date on upcoming events, tests, what we are learning about in school, and week-specific suggestions for questions you can ask your child to find out more about what he/she is learning.
Regards,
Mrs. Wippich
Update-6/2/19
Hello,
It is so hard to believe, but this is the last update I will be sending to you. This year has flown by- I can’t believe our time together will be coming to an end this Friday. I just wanted to THANK YOU all for such a fantastic year. You have been such a wonderful support system and have helped to make this year so special. Thank you for all the kind emails, notes, gifts, and time that you’ve given to make this year so memorable.
This is the most amazing group of kids; I feel so incredibly fortunate for the time I was lucky enough to spend with them. I’m not going to lie, you will probably hear several stories about me crying this week (and I may or may not be crying as I write this). Over their fifth-grade year, I grow to love these kids like they're my own and it is so difficult to say goodbye. Even though they will be leaving my class, they will never leave my heart.
I know that many of you are probably having a hard time as your children will be leaving the doors of Algonkian as students for the last time. They’ve grown so much this year and I know they will excel both academically and socially as they continue on to middle school. I hope your last summer with them before they make that transition is full of fun and lots of great memories. I would love to hear about their adventures as they progress through school if you (or they) don’t mind sending me an occasional update. Please keep in touch!
Now, on to the update:
Regards,
Mrs. Wippich

- There is no homework this week.
- The kids did an outstanding job on their SOLs. I appreciate the effort they put in and am so proud of their accomplishments.
- Our class will be turning in our Chromebooks TOMORROW. Please make sure your child has his/her charger as well to turn in.
- Thank you to everyone who has pitched in to make the 5th grade spirit week and legacy project a success. I know this is a lot of work and I truly appreciate it!
- I am running a book exchange for the school this week. If you have any children’s books (any age level K-6) that you would like to donate, please send them in by Tuesday. The kids in my class are going to help run the book exchange!
- 5th grade changed their plans about which shirts to wear when this week to make laundry easier :) On Tuesday, students should wear their musical shirts for field day. They should then wear their red 2019 shirts for the 5th grade picnic.
- Lastly, I am going to be sending home an optional "teacher assessment" for the parents to complete if you don't mind doing so. I would love to know what I did that worked for you and also any suggestions you have so that I can continue to grow as an educator. Thank you in advance for taking the time to do this. You can send it in with your child before school ends or drop it off in the office any time this summer.
- Field Day- 6/4 (wear your musical shirt)
- 5th grade spirit week:
- Movie-6/3 1-2:30pm

Happy Sunday! I have a feeling this time change is really going to hit us hard tomorrow morning!
Here are our updates:
- Homework has been posted.
- The kids will have a test on the order of operations this Friday. Many kids took a pre-test on Friday and are not required to take the test this Friday due to doing so well. I will send home a study guide with those students who need one tomorrow.
- The kids will have a science vocabulary quiz this Wednesday, March 13. They can access a Quizlet with all of the terms to study here. They were also given paper flashcards last week to study.
- We will be working with microscopes this week. On the first day, we will look at pre-made slides. On the second day, we will create our own slides with red onion to see plant cells. On the third day, we will lightly scrape the inside of our mouths to make slides with our cheek cells. If you do not want your child to work with onion or to make their own cheek cell slide, please let me know!
- The kids will have a test on our life science unit on March 28. We still have not completed everything- this is just a heads-up so they can practice the vocabulary words on Quizlet (there is a life science Quizlet I created here that includes the entire unit, not just cells). There will be additional study guides sent home closer to the test
- In Math, we will review the order of operations and patterns. If we have time, we may also move on to circles.
- In Reading, we will review methods for finding main idea and supporting details.
- In Science, we will continue to learn about the parts of plant and animal cells and then move on to classification of organisms.

Update-1/14/19
Hello! Hope you enjoyed the snowy weekend!
Here are our updates for this week:
Regards,
Mrs. Wippich
Here are our updates for this week:
- There is no homework this week.
- We have a matter vocabulary test on Thursday. The kids were given the cards to study last week. I created a Quizlet to help them study so they can use it to prepare. Please note that we have not covered all of the terms yet, however, memorizing the terms and definitions now will help them understand the concepts better as we explore them in class.
- We will have a test on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers as well as multiplying fractions times a whole number on January 25. I created some how to videos and put them on my website. I will send home a study guide once we get closer.
- I will be sending home additional copies of the Meet the Band field trip permission slip for anyone who hasn’t turned one in yet. Our field trip is on January 25.
- As I mentioned last week, we are doing a unit on nonfiction texts and it is very important that the kids are practicing what they are learning by reading nonfiction texts that interest them. If possible, it would be great if you take your child to the public library to find some nonfiction books that they enjoy (especially if they haven't been able to find any at school). I do have some in my class but since everyone's interests are so varied, it is hard to make sure I have something to draw-in each of the kids.
- We are running low on the following supplies: pencils, markers, quart and sandwich sized bags. If you can donate any, it would be greatly appreciated!
- In Math, we will multiply fractions.
- In Reading, we will continue our unit on nonfiction texts, focusing on text structures and main idea vs. topic.
- In Science, we will continue our matter unit by differentiating between atoms, elements, molecules, and compounds.
- We will use some of our Writing time for word study, specifically affixes.
- School Spelling Bee- January 17
- End of 2nd Quarter- January 17
- No school- January 18
- No school- January 21
- Bobcat Bounce at Atomic Trampoline Spirit Day- January 21
- Field trip to high school for Meet the Band- January 25
- Movie Night- January 25

Update-1/6/19
Hello! Here are our updates for this week:
- The homework for the week has been posted on the website.
- There will be a test on homophones this Friday, 1/11. A study guide will be sent home tomorrow and I will be creating a quizlet as well. As soon as I’m able to scan the study guide I’ll post it to the website.
- We will do our in-class preliminary spelling bee tomorrow. Ms. Shields sent a list a while ago via ConnectEd and a printed copy was sent home Friday in case students wanted to study (NOT required).
- We will have a test on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers as well as multiplying fractions times a whole number in 1.5-2 weeks (I need to gauge student readiness). In the meantime, to study, students can watch a few videos I made to help them. These videos are on my website. I will also send home a study guide once we get closer.
- There will be a vocabulary quiz on Matter in a couple of weeks. I created a Quizlet to help them study and will send home the words this week so they can prepare. Please note that we have not covered all of the terms yet, however, memorizing the terms and definitions now will help them understand the concepts better as we explore them in class.
- I will be sending home additional copies of the Meet the Band field trip permission slip for anyone who hasn’t turned one in yet.
- In reading, we are doing a unit on nonfiction texts and it is very important that the kids are practicing what they are learning by reading nonfiction texts that interest them. If possible, it would be great if you take your child to the public library to find some nonfiction books that they enjoy (especially if they haven't been able to find any at school). I do have some in my class but since everyone's interests are so varied, it is hard to make sure I have something to draw-in each of the kids.
- In Math, we will continue adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers.
- In Reading, we will continue our new unit on nonfiction texts.
- In Writing, we will focus on homophones.
- In Science, we will continue our matter unit by moving on to atoms.
- In Social Studies, we will begin our unit on the Midwest region.
- After-school basketball starts January 8
- PTA meeting- January 10
- School Spelling Bee- January 17
- End of 2nd Quarter- January 17
- No school- January 18
- No school- January 21
- Bobcat Bounce at Atomic Trampoline Spirit Day- January 21
- Field trip to high school for Meet the Band- January 25
- Movie Night- January 25

I hope you managed to get through all the rain unscathed this weekend! Here are our updates for the week- sorry, it’s a long one.
- DARE posters are due by Friday. The guidelines were sent home a while ago, but I have also posted it on my website should you need to access it.
- Homework officially starts this week. I will send home a paper copy tomorrow, Monday the 10th, however, I have also posted it on our class website should your child need to print another copy. It's amazing how these things have a way of disappearing when the kids leave the building ?? The sheet is due Friday.
- The homework is one sheet, front and back, containing 4th grade math (side 1) and 4th grade science (side 2) review questions. It is divided into sections to help the children pace themselves but is not due to me until Friday, so if they want to do it all in one night they can (though I hope not).
- If your child needs help with the homework, please have them see me. It should never take a child more than an hour to complete their homework each night (this time includes the required 20 minutes of reading). If it does, please stop your child at one hour and let me know!
- There will be a science vocabulary test on Wednesday, September 19. The kids will glue a study guide into their notebooks tomorrow (I've also posted it on the website). We will be studying for the test in class with the new strategies we learn, HOWEVER, they should still study nightly (5-10 minutes MAX) at home to ensure they are learning good habits. I’ve written a post on my website about ways the kids can prepare for the test(there are ideas for with or without a partner/parent). I also included a link to a set of online flashcards I created on the website Quizlet. This site allows the kids to study through games and other methods online.
- We will be doing an investigation on Wednesday that involves using distilled white vinegar. The kids will be using it to clean pennies and will NOT be ingesting it. If you would still prefer that your child not participate in the investigation due to a sensitivity to vinegar, please let me know!
- In Science we’ll be conducting experiments and working with scientific investigation vocabulary.
- In Math, we will continue to work on solving single and multi-step word problems.
- In Writing, we will continue with our personal narratives.
- In Reading, we will continue discussing strategies for reading fiction and analyzing characters.
- In Social Studies, we will be wrapping up the five themes of geography.
- We will also continue learning study strategies.
- Last day to order spirit wear is 9/10.
- There will be a PTA meeting on 9/11 at 7pm.
- Donuts with Dudes is scheduled for September 20 at 7am.
- Walkathon- 9/28. Walk-a-thon packets were sent home a week or so ago. Please consider letting your child participate.
- Spirit night at Jersey Mike's- 9/28.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Wippich

I hope you've had a nice long, relaxing weekend! Here are our updates for the week:
- The kids met Deputy Miller this past week and were given their first DARE assignment- a poster for the annual calendar contest. These posters are due to me on 9/14 so I can get them to Deputy Miller by his due date. The criteria sheet was sent home last week but I've also posted it on my website should your child need it. This is not an optional assignment.
- This is the last week of no homework (other than the DARE poster). Next week, 9/10, we will officially start homework.
- I've updated the website with pictures and videos of activities we did last week.
- This week we will be learning about: the scientific method, solving single and multi-step word problems, how to begin writing a personal narrative, the five themes of geography, and strategies for reading fiction. We will also work in some study strategy work to prepare for fifth grade and beyond.
- Upcoming important school/PTA dates and events:
- Friday night (9/7) is BINGO! I will be calling numbers and look forward to seeing many of you there!
- Last day to order spirit wear is 9/10.
- There will be a PTA meeting on 9/11 at 7pm.
- Donuts with Dudes is scheduled for September 20 at 7am.
- Walkathon- 9/28. Walk-a-thon packets were sent home this past week. Please consider letting your child participate. It is our biggest fundraiser and is so much fun!
- Spirit night at Jersey Mike's- 9/28.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Wippich

Hello,
It was a pleasure meeting many of you over the past several days. If you were unable to make it to Back to School Night, please click here for my back to school packet. Like I stated at Back to School Night, I try my hardest to send an email every at the start of each week.
Here are some updates for the weeks ahead:

Here are some updates for the weeks ahead:
- I've created the Sign-Up Genius for conferences in October. Please sign up for a slot! If none of the times work for you, I will do my best to accommodate your schedule.
- Homework will start on Monday, September 10. If you want your child to do "homework" before then, Reflex math is a good option to review their math facts. And, of course, they should be reading every day at home!
- Students will be getting their Chromebooks tomorrow during Library if they turned in a completed Student Device Usage form and guardians accepted the Student Rights and Responsibilities on ParentVue. If you would like more information on the county's Personalized Learning devices or policies, please click here.
- FUTURA- The teachers will be visiting Algonkian tomorrow morning for a quick meet and greet with the kids. A letter was sent home on Thursday regarding this visit and other Futura information.
- Tuesday night is a Spirit Night at Coal Fire Pizza. I hope to see you there!
- If you haven't signed up for Remind, please consider doing so-it is a great tool for communication. Directions are attached.
- I updated the blog with some photos and a video. I will have a lot more to post over the next week, so feel free to check in occasionally to see what's new :)

Mrs. Wippich
Update- 6/10/18
Hello,
It is very hard to believe, but this is my last email to you all. This year has really flown by. I just wanted to express my sincerest gratitude to all of you for being so supportive and for entrusting me with your child's education. I am going to miss the kids terribly :( From all of the donations of materials and time, to the generous gifts and words of encouragement, I cannot thank you enough for your kindness. I would love it if the kids could keep in touch with me so I can see how they are adjusting to middle school. I wish you all the best of luck as your children enter the next phase of their education.
Here are some updates for this week:
Warm regards,

Here are some updates for this week:
- Tomorrow is the 5th grade picnic. Some kids chose not to order a subway sandwich and will need to bring a bagged lunch.
- Tomorrow evening is the promotion ceremony from 6:30-8:30. The kids should arrive at 6:15pm wearing nice clothes. Parents may go to the gym at that time to get seats.
- Tuesday the kids will sign yearbooks with the entire 5th grade in the morning, so please be sure your child has their yearbook (or a notebook to get signatures if they didn't purchase a yearbook and want to bring one).
- Tuesday afternoon the fifth graders will eat lunch and watch a movie in the cafeteria until dismissal. If you can help out with chaperoning the movie, we would really appreciate it!
- Wednesday is the last day of school. Please join us if you can at 2:15 to clap out our fifth graders as they leave the halls of Algonkian for the last time as elementary students.
- I will be archiving the blog from this year on my webpage but all of the photos and videos will still be accessible in case they want to look back :)
Warm regards,
Mrs. Wippich

I am very sorry I missed sending an email last week. As I know is true for many people right now, life has been a bit crazy. Here is our second to the last update. (WOW!)

I am very sorry I missed sending an email last week. As I know is true for many people right now, life has been a bit crazy. Here is our second to the last update. (WOW!)
- A huge thank you to all of the STEM lab volunteers! Without you it would not have been possible! We truly appreciate you taking time out of your busy day to help us.
- There will be no more homework for the remainder of the year, however, we will still be doing academics and review.
- We have several important dates coming up over the next week and a half:
- Thursday is Field Day! Your child should wear his/her red fifth grade t-shirt and lots of sunscreen. Bug spray doesn't hurt, either! Fifth grade's field day is from 8:30am-11am just after the long distance race.
- Friday the fifth graders will be treated to Snow Cones. If you would prefer your child not have one due to allergies or dietary restrictions, please let me know by Thursday as I will be out Friday at my son's preschool graduation.
- Monday, June 11 is the 5th grade picnic. Those kids who wanted them chose their sub orders in class. Please make sure your child puts on sunscreen in the morning prior to coming to school as we will be outside for an extended time that afternoon.
- Monday, June 11 is also the 5th grade promotion ceremony from 6:30-8:30pm in the gym. If possible, students should wear nice dress clothes (no jeans, shorts, etc.).
- Tuesday, June 12 the 5th graders will have an opportunity to sign yearbooks on the blacktop. If students do not have a yearbook and want to bring a journal or notebook with them, they may do so.
- Wednesday is our last day :( Please join us around 2:20 as we clap out our fifth graders/rising sixth graders as they exit the school for the last time as elementary students (I'm getting teary just thinking about it!).
- If you would like a summer math packet for your child to review this summer, please let me know and I will copy and send one home this week.
Regards,
Mrs. Wippich

I hope you have had a nice weekend :) Here are our updates for the week:
- The kids have reading homework this week to prepare for the SOL which is next week(!) on the 16th. Unfortunately, due to copyright issues I cannot post it on the website but would be happy to make extra copies if anyone loses it. We are following a different format this week.
- Each night the kids will be assigned part of a review packet to complete that same evening. We will then go over it in class the next morning so it must be completed each night, not by Friday. If they want to do the whole packet in one night, that is fine.
- Because we spent time reviewing all of the standards this week to prepare for our benchmark, the kids asked me to reschedule their math test and I agreed. They will now be tested on mean, median, mode, and range this Friday, May 11.
- The 5th grade panoramic photo is this Friday at 8:30am. The kids will be given their new 5th grade t-shirts that morning to wear for the photo. These shirts will then be worn again for the DARE graduation on May 23 and Field day on June 7. Some other important dates:
- Reading SOL-May 16th
- DARE graduation- May 23, 9am
- Math SOL- May 24
- Science SOL-June 1
- 5th Grade Promotion Ceremony- June 12th @ 6:30pm
- I am so sorry I haven't posted photos or videos on my blog lately. The end of the year is always super crazy. I hope to get to posting them early this week.
- A couple of study guides will come home this week for science and math.
Regards,
Mrs. Wippich

We have been practicing a lot in class with these concepts (except triangles, which we start this week) and kids are doing well. I will work with any kids this week that need additional assistance with these topics. Here is a link to my math blog where I've included links to learn about all of these topics. If your child would like to borrow a protractor from me to practice at home, I will be offering them this week. There are resources on the website and I will send home study guides this week.

Hello!
Happy last Sunday of February! Here are our updates for the week:
- There will be homework this week. It has been posted to the website.
- Students will have a test on decimal operations this Friday, March 2. A study guide has been posted on the website as well as a number of online resources your child can use to prepare. - 6th grade course selection forms were sent home on Friday with all 5th grade students. If you have any questions about placement, please let me know. Just a reminder, all students received "Honors" courses because that is what they call them at River Bend. The only courses you need to worry about selecting are math and music.
- The Invention Expo is Wednesday evening. I hope to see you there! A few kids from our class have submitted projects for the event and I can't wait to see them!

I hope you had a good weekend, despite the crazy weather! Here are some updates for our short week.
- In order to celebrate the nice weather that is coming, I've decided to only assign reading for homework this week. Students should be reading no less than 30 minutes each day at home and should play outside as much as possible during the nice weather :)
- The Instrument Test Drive and 6th Grade Orientation are at River Bend on the 22nd. See this link for more details.
- I've posted some more information on activities we've been doing in class on the website. Feel free to check them out.

- If you can donate more baby wipes, we'd really appreciate it! We've been doing some messy activities in class lately with playdoh, Model Magic, markers, etc. and are running low again. I have plenty of Clorox wipes but need something the kids can use for their hands. Thank you!

- The kids will have a test on cells this Tuesday, February 13. I sent home a study guide last week which the kids also worked on in class. It is also posted on the website along with a lot of other resources to study with.
- Valentine's Day is Wednesday and though we will not be having a party, I will allow the students to hand out valentines to their classmates as long as they bring one for everyone in class. Attached is a class list. In keeping with Loudoun County Public School's food allergy policy, PLEASE do not send in candy or food gifts with the valentines as I will be forced to collect all of it and eat it myself ;) Joking- I'll send it back home.
- Our field trip to River Bend is this Thursday, February 15. I have most of the permission slips back in- thank you! Your child has been notified if I didn't receive one from them yet. Students will be allowed to have lunch at the school on Thursday so they should have either a packed lunch or money in their account (or cash) to purchase a lunch. We will likely be there from around 9 or 9:15 until 11:45 or so.
- If you haven't made your child's music choice for middle school yet in ParentVue, please be sure to do so by Friday. If your child wants to change after attending Instrument Test Drive Night on February 22, just let either Ms. Comrie or me know and we'll help with the change!

Hello,
I hope you all were able to enjoy some of the beautiful weather this weekend. I look forward to a nice day tomorrow with the kids as well!
Here are our updates for the week:
- As you may have heard it is a spirit week! Here is the list of spirit wear themes for each day:
- Monday- Jersey day
- Tuesday- Wear your favorite color
- Wednesday- Crazy socks and shoes day
- Thursday- Rainbow colors day
- Friday- Algonkian spirit colors/wear
- This week marks the start of the Souper Bowl. If you have any food you can donate to the food drive, we'd really appreciate it!
- There will be homework this week. It has been posted on the website.
- Students will have a test on adding and subtracting fractions on Friday, January 26. Study guides will be sent home with kids tomorrow and are available on the website. There are also numerous resources on my Math Blog that can be accessed for extra practice.
- There is no school for students on Monday, January 29 as it is a teacher workday.
- I have created a Sign-up Genius for some supplies we will be needing for our new science unit on cells and other life science topics. If you can donate any of them, it would help me out a lot. Thank you!
- I also created a new Quizlet study deck on fourth grade science if you want to have your child review. A little more than half of the questions on the Science SOL test that the kids take in 5th grade are on 4th grade science topics so a refresher is helpful. Click here to be taken to the flash cards and games for the 4th grade standards. There are also some other study sets that I've created HERE.
- Congratulations to CC and Lily for their hard work in the school Spelling Bee! Way to go, CC, for getting second place!

Mrs. Wippich

I hope you've had a great (hopefully long) weekend :) Here are our updates for the week!
- There will be homework this week. It has been posted on my website.
- Students will have a test this Friday on Matter. We have been/will be preparing for it in class but it would also be useful for your child to practice at home. In addition to the flash cards the kids made last week and their interactive notebooks, I will be sending home a study guide tomorrow andhave posted it on my website. I have also posted a link to an online flashcard set that I created for the vocabulary in the unit. The kids can use the website to play games to study for the test. They can also use my posts on the blog to study for the tests- here is a link that takes you to all of the matter posts.
- Friday at 9am is Algonkian's Spelling Bee! Congratulations to Lily and Sophia for representing our class in the school bee!
- Tomorrow, Tuesday the 16th, is a MONDAY schedule.
- ASAP starts this week.
- We will be starting a new math unit this week on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. I've posted some links to games and other sites that your child can use at home to practice.
- THANK YOU to all who sent in supplies this past week! We've been putting all of them to good use! I will actually have some odd donation requests in the coming weeks for some science experiments we'll be doing in class. I'll be sending out a Sign-up Genius soon to see if anyone can help out with supplies.

Mrs. Wippich
Update- 1/7/18
Hello,
Happy Sunday once again! Here are our updates for the week:
Thanks!
Mrs. Wippich
Happy Sunday once again! Here are our updates for the week:
- There will be homework this week. I've posted it on the website and will send it home with the kids tomorrow.
- The kids will have a math quiz on converting fractions to decimals and vice-versa on and ordering/comparing decimals and fractions this Friday, January 12. I will post the study guide online tomorrow and send it home (sorry for the delay- I have to scan it at school so I can upload it).
- If you missed my email last week about the upcoming 6th grade River Bend orientation/instrument night and the 6th grade math placement test, please see the post (BELOW) on the Class Newsletter page of my website. We will be taking the math placement test on Thursday.
- The school Spelling Bee is set for Friday, January 19 at 9am. I will announce the contestants from our class later this week after I have finalized them.
- Students will have a unit test on Matter on Friday, January 19. I will be posting resources to the website this week and will also send home a study guide with the kids.
- Once again, if you can donate any of the following to our class, we'd appreciate it: index cards (3x5), dry erase markers, pencils, pens, hand wipes/baby wipes.
- Lastly, our classroom was rather chilly last week as the heat had a hard time keeping up with the super low temperatures. It might be a good idea to remind your child to not only wear a heavy jacket and gloves (with name inside) to school but to wear layers- the temperatures can vary greatly even within the building.
Thanks!
Mrs. Wippich

Update- 1/4/18
Hello,
Sorry to email you two days in a row but I just received some updates on important dates regarding middle school.
6th Grade Math Placement Test
A letter will be sent home early next week about the 6th grade math placement test the kids will be taking (test will likely be Thursday or Friday next week- I'll let you know once the date is confirmed). This letter has a place to fill out if you want to opt your child out of this test. PLEASE NOTE: Students do not need to prepare for this test!
The test helps the county make its recommendation for the math course your child should take in 6th grade. A form will be sent home at a later date with your child's score and the county's recommendation (as well as input from me). You will then need to return the form (more details on that later).
Regardless of the results, you have the final say regarding which course your child takes, so even if the county recommends Advanced Math 6/7 (both 6th and 7th grade math in one year), you can still have your child placed in Math 6 (or vice-versa).
Instrument Test Drive and 6th Grade Orientation Night
Algonkian's instrument test drive and orientation night at River Bend is on February 22. This is a time for you and your child to visit the middle school, try out the instruments that are offered in music next year, and learn about the transition to River Bend. It is HIGHLY recommended you and your child attend this event as it is very informative. I was sent two documents about this event, however, they are too large for me to attach to this email. To view these documents please go to my website and visit the Class Newsletter tab (or click the blue link).
If you have any questions, please let me know and I'll try my best to answer them or point you in the right direction!
On a side note, I've posted on the main page of my website about atoms and subatomic particles so the kids can study tomorrow if they (or you) so desire. We will likely take a test on matter January 18 or 19. Another good option if you want them to do some academic work tomorrow is for the kids to log on to DreamBox (through the go.lcps.org) website. They should know their logins.
Have a great evening!

Update- 1/3/18
Hello,
I am sorry to be sending this email a couple days later than I planned to- I have been a bit under the weather. Here are some updates:
Regards,
Mrs. Wippich
I am sorry to be sending this email a couple days later than I planned to- I have been a bit under the weather. Here are some updates:
- We are easing back into school this week, reviewing concepts from before break and getting started on our research writing unit and nonfiction/research reading unit. Students are encouraged to be reading as much nonfiction as they can to practice with the concepts we are discussing in class.
- Homework will resume next week.
- Students will have a math quiz on converting fractions to decimals and vice-versa on and ordering/comparing decimals and fractions next week on Friday, January 12. Resources to study will be sent home over the next few days.
- The Spelling Bee will take place on Friday, January 19 at 9am. We already have one confirmed participant in our class and are waiting on a tie-breaker for 2nd place and runner up! Congratulations to Lily for making it to the school Bee!
- DONATIONS REQUESTED
- In order to assist students with studying for tests, we will be making flash cards for our science units. If you are able to donate a pack or two of lined 3x5 index cards, I'd greatly appreciate it. I anticipate each student will need at least 100. I purchased blank game boards for each of the kids to design their own games, using the flash cards as the "trivia" questions. Should be fun!
- Also, if you are able to donate any pencils, pens, dry erase markers, or baby wipes (unscented, if possible), we'd really appreciate it as we are running low.
Regards,
Mrs. Wippich
Update- 12/10/17
Hello,
I hope you stayed warm this snowy weekend! Here are some updates for the week:
Regards,
Mrs. Wippich
I hope you stayed warm this snowy weekend! Here are some updates for the week:
- There will not be any homework this week except to try to read 2 books. Kids at the fifth grade level should be finishing between 2-3 books a week if they are reading at school and at home as they are supposed to. Of course, if they are reading longer books like Harry Potter, they may not finish more than 1 :)
- Tuesday night is Reading Under the Stars. I hope to see you there!
- The 5th grade musical is on Thursday! Students should wear the musical shirts to school that day for the daytime performance. The shirts were handed out Friday afternoon.
- Performances will be at 1:30pm and 6:30pm. For the evening show, students should arrive at school between 6:10 and 6:15pm and report directly to their classroom. They should not bring any coats or other items to the room as the door will be locked during and after the performance.
- Our class party is on Friday at 1:45pm (we have a slightly different schedule than the other fifth grade classes this time around). We will be in Mrs. Troianello’s room again for the party. Thanks to Mrs. Palmer and Mrs. Garrett for their help in planning it!
- I’ve updated the website with photos and videos of things we did last week, along with explanations for those students who would like to revisit the concepts. Feel free to check them out! I’m hoping to post more this week as we get into the challenging concepts of fraction to decimal conversions and equivalents.

Mrs. Wippich
Update- 12/3/17
Hello,
I hope everyone is well! Here are our updates for the week:
Sincerely,
Mrs. Wippich
I hope everyone is well! Here are our updates for the week:
- Our rounding decimals test that was originally scheduled for last Friday will take place this Friday, December 8. A study guide was sent home early last week (and there was a problem that didn't have a correct answer in the options- sorry about that!) and is posted on my website.
- Our fifth grade musical is next week on Thursday, December 14. We have a performance during the school day at 1:30 and another that evening at 6:30. Please have your child to school no later than 6:15pm that evening. They should wear their musical shirts to school that day and again that evening. These shirts should be coming home soon.
- Homework has been posted on the website.
- I updated the website with some posts on our new science unit. Feel free to check them out!
- Great job to our Geography Bee participants, Mitchell and Areej, last week!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Wippich

It's that time again! I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving :) Here are some updates for the week:
- Field trip permission slips are due back ASAP for our field trip this Friday, December 1 to Potomac Falls for their "Meet the Band" concert. If you need another copy, please let me know.
- The Geography Bee will take place this Tuesday morning at 9am. Congratulations to the two finalists from our class that will be participating- Mitchell and Areej! Best of luck!
- There is homework this week!
- Students will have a quiz on rounding decimals this Friday, December 1. A study guide has been posted on my website and will be sent home tomorrow. Your child can also access resources on my Math Blog, if desired.
- Just a reminder that I am now sending short updates, pictures, and reminders through the Reminder app. It enables parents and teachers to communicate via text. I will still be sending my weekly email but will likely send any other more urgent reminders via this service. If you would like to sign up, please sign up via this link.
- Our Winter Party is coming up in a few weeks. If you are willing to help out with planning the event, please let me know! It is scheduled for Friday, December 15 at 1:45pm. Once again, Mr. Blubaugh has asked that the emphasis be placed on fun activities rather than food. :) So far I haven't had any volunteers.
- In Science we will be starting on our new unit this week, matter. Feel free to ask your child what they are learning! The standards for this unit include:
- a) distinguishing properties of each phase of matter;
- b) the effect of temperature on the phases of matter;
- c) atoms and elements;
- d) molecules and compounds; and
- e) mixtures including solutions.

Hello!
Happy Sunday! Here are some updates for the week:
Warm Regards,
Mrs. Wippich
Happy Sunday! Here are some updates for the week:
- I sent an email to everyone inviting parents/guardians to sign up for an (optional) message service called Remind that allows me to send short reminders and updates through text, email, etc. (whatever you prefer). If you didn't join and would like to, please click this link and enter your information. I will still be sending my weekly emails but the Remind app will allow me to communicate important reminders and messages more quickly than sending an email. This service also allows you to send me a quick message which I might see faster than an email.
- The kids have a test on elapsed time on Tuesday. A study guide was sent home last week and has been posted on my website. In addition to games and websites to practice with, I also posted a couple of videos I made on how to calculate elapsed time and how to read an analog clock when it is toward the end of an hour (which some of the kids are having trouble with).
- We have a field trip to Potomac Falls on December 1 for the kids to be introduced to the instruments they will have the opportunity to play in middle school. A field trip permission slip will be sent home tomorrow with those kids who didn't receive one on Friday. Please try to get these in by Tuesday, if at all possible. If not, I will accept them at the start of next week, too. Sorry for the quick turn-around time! I will post a copy on my website, too, if your child misplaces their form.
- Our Winter Party is coming up in a few weeks. If you are willing to help out with planning the event, please let me know! It is scheduled for Friday, December 15 at 1:45pm. Once again, Mr. Blubaugh has asked that the emphasis be placed on fun activities rather than food. :)
- If you haven't done so already, please return your child's report card envelope and signature slip as soon as possible. Thank you!
Warm Regards,
Mrs. Wippich

What a cold weekend we've had! I hope you've been able to stay warm :)
Here are some updates for the busy week ahead.
- Monday morning at 9am we will have a Veteran's Day assembly.
- Homework for the week has been posted on the website and will be sent home tomorrow.
- Tuesday afternoon we invite you to our classroom to view our Book Buzz trailers. The kids have been hard at work getting these ready for you. The presentations will start promptly at 1:45pm- hope to see you there!
- Report cards will be going home on Wednesday.
- The Turkey Race might be moved to Thursday afternoon. I have not received final confirmation yet but will email once I hear from Mr. Blubaugh.
- Friday the kids will have a unit test on Light. In addition to my posts on the main page of the website, I have posted resources on the homework page of my website. If your child didn't receive a study guide on Friday, they will receive one tomorrow.
- On Tuesday, November 21 the kids will have a test on elapsed time in math. If your child will not be at school that day, they can either take the test on Monday or when they return from Thanksgiving break. I've posted a study guide and am working on posting a video I made to explain how to solve these types of problems.
- I've posted a lot of pictures and videos from the last week or two of school to the website. Feel free to check them out :) If you went on the field trip with us and have pictures I can post, please feel free to send them along so I can add them to our website.
- Due to our extremely busy week last week, I kept forgetting to send home the polymer beads with the kids (sorry!). I'll be doing that tomorrow.
Thanks for your time!
Mrs. Wippich
Update- November 7, 2017
Hello,
Happy Tuesday! It is so hard to believe that the first quarter is over! I've thoroughly enjoyed working with your kids so far this year and am looking forward to all of the exciting things to come :)

Happy Tuesday! It is so hard to believe that the first quarter is over! I've thoroughly enjoyed working with your kids so far this year and am looking forward to all of the exciting things to come :)
Here are some updates for the week (and beyond).
- Thank you to the chaperones who came with us to Udvar Hazy on Friday! I took some photos and videos but haven't had time to post them to the blog yet. As soon as I'm done with report cards, I'll post them.
- We will NOT have homework this week as it is a short week.
- The fifth graders will be working on a project this week that will require them to make book trailers using technology. They will be presenting these to parents on Tuesday next week (November 14) at 1:45pm in their respective classrooms. I hope you can make it!
- Students will have a light unit test on Friday next week, November 17. I will be sending home study guide materials later this week but the kids can always get a head start using their science interactive notebooks or access my website which has lots of information, including the study guide.
- The Great Turkey Race is taking place on Friday, November 17. All permission slips were sent home last week and are due back tomorrow, November 8.
- I bought some home polymer beads (like Orbeez) to send home tomorrow with each of the kids. We used them last week to learn about light refraction. If you have small children or pets at home, please be careful with the beads as they expand as they absorb water and are extremely dangerous if ingested. The kids were all warned about this in class, but I just wanted to get the warning out to the parents, too. Here is a great website that explains the science behind the beads and what they have to do with light, in case you are interested. It generally takes about 24 hours for these particular beads to get to their largest size when placed in water. I will be posting videos and information on my website when I have time later this week or weekend :)

Happy Sunday :) Here are some updates for the week!
- Our field trip to Udvar Hazy is this Friday, November 3! All field trip permission slips are due no later than Tuesday. Tomorrow I will send home another copy of the permission slip with students who have not yet turned them in. If you turned in the chaperone form, I will let you know Tuesday afternoon if you have been chosen.
- If your child will need a school lunch to take on the field trip, please be sure to fill out the appropriate form (it was included with the permission slip) and return ASAP.
- I’ve had a few kids tell me they might not be able to go on the field trip on Friday as they will be out of town. Please let me know as soon as possible if your child will miss the field trip so I can plan groups accordingly (and so I don't pester the kids by constantly asking for their permission slips).
- Homework has been posted on the class website.
- The kids will have a test on Thursday on patterns and functions. A study guide will be coming home tomorrow and has been posted on the website.
- I added a lot of photos and videos to the website of our activities this past week, however, I somehow forgot to take pictures at the book character parade and party :( If you have any photos you can share of the parade or party, I’d really appreciate it if you could send them to me so I can add them to the website to share with the group. Thank you!
- Speaking of the party, a HUGE thank you to Mrs. Garrett for the unbelievable party she put together for our class on Friday. She went above and beyond and we all had such a great time! Her hand-painted pumpkins were phenomenal! Thank you, also, to all the wonderful families that sent in treats and supplies for our party- we had quite the feast!
- Kwame Alexander will be visiting the school on Wednesday for an assembly. He is the author of the Newbery Award-winning book “The Crossover” as well as other books and poems. Be sure to ask your child all about it!
Regards,
Mrs. Wippich
