This week we had a lot of fun experimenting with microscopes! The first day we used them, we looked at some pre-made slides of things like fern leaves, rabbit intestines, dog brain cells, blood cells, etc. Below are a couple of pictures I was able to take through the microscope. They are really cool because they help you to see the difference in the shapes of different types of cells. As you can see, the animal blood cells (on the left-these are from a frog) are more round in shape and the plant cells (on the right) are shaped more like bricks. Below are some pictures of a plant stem at three different magnification strengths. The next day, we were lucky enough to have a Watchdog Dad, Ryan's dad, visiting so we had an extra set of hands when we made our own slides and got to see a tiny piece of ourselves under a microscope! We scraped cells from inside of our mouths and looked at them using blue dye under a microscope. Here are a few pictures and a video of the activity. Then we looked at a red onion's cells under a microscope- so cool! We could see the brick-like structure easily. Below are some photos of the cells under different magnifications.

This past week we used regular household items to create cell models. Thank you so much to those parents who donated supplies! Students chose groups to make both animal and plant cell models. To make the animal cell, we did the following:
Next we made our plant cell models in much the same way.
Here are some photos and a video with an explanation. |
